Jill Scott is the only child from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia the state of Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Scott was raised as an only daughter of her grandmother. Scott attended an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls followed by Temple University after graduating. There, Scott worked at two different jobs while studying secondary education. She hoped to become a high-school English teacher. However, her dream ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit the college after a year of studying and becoming a teacher's assistant. She began her career by performing live poems and writing her own material. In the end, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. Then, during Roots' show she came out as an artist. After that, she secured collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was also able to gain experiences on the stage, as she was a part of the Canada tour of Broadway show Rent. She was contracted to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
